The Bump Report · UK Edition

Nearly Every Pregnant Woman In The UK Worries About Stretch Marks.
Almost None Are Told Why Cocoa Butter Never Reaches Them.

If you've walked into Boots looking for a proper stretch mark cream during pregnancy, you've probably left more confused than when you walked in. Twelve tubs. Twelve promises. None of them actually explain where stretch marks come from. Here's what dermatology researchers now know, and what a small team of mums built as a response, formulated to UK cosmetic standards, delivered across the UK with all duties covered.

What the numbers actually say

Not the marketing figures on the back of a jar. The real ones, from the NHS and peer-reviewed studies.

8/10
UK mums develop stretch marks in pregnancy
75%
say the fear of permanence weighs on them daily
3mm
below the skin surface is where the marks actually form

Sources: NHS, British Journal of Dermatology, Michigan Medicine (2021).

Where the marks really form

Your cocoa butter smells lovely. It's just not going anywhere near the layer that matters.

This is the bit nobody explains on the tub. Stretch marks don't form on the surface of your skin. They form 3 mm below it, in a layer called the dermis. And that's the layer most belly creams sold in the UK never reach.

Here's what's actually happening under your skin from around week 20 onwards.

Skin layers cross-section showing where stretch marks form during pregnancy
E
Epidermis · what you can see and touch
Your skin's first defence. Brilliant at keeping things out. Including most skincare, if we're being honest.
D
Dermis · where stretch marks actually form
This is where your elastic fibres live. Think tiny rubber bands that let your skin stretch as your bump grows, then snap back after. When the bump grows faster than the fibres can adapt, they can tear. That's your stretch mark. Not on the surface. Down here.
H
Hypodermis · the deep support layer
Fat, temperature, the boring but essential jobs. Not involved in the stretch mark story.

So when you smooth on your belly butter at night, it sits on the epidermis. Feels lovely. Smells lovely.
And never gets anywhere near the dermis where it needs to be.

The bit Boots doesn't mention · The Cochrane Review
A 2012 Cochrane systematic review of six clinical trials on eight hundred pregnant women looked at every popular topical: cocoa butter, olive oil, almond oil, vitamin E creams. It found no high-quality evidence that any of them reduces new stretch mark formation. Which is why we're not going to make you a promise about erasing them. We're going to tell you what the research shows works, and what it doesn't.

The one ingredient dermatology took seriously

After decades of testing cocoa butter, researchers went looking somewhere else.

The Cochrane review was published in 2012. It should have ended the belly butter industry. It didn't. But it did push a small group of dermatology researchers to look at something different. A botanical extract used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries, now sitting in the shortlist of ingredients that actually showed something interesting in the lab.

🌿 Centella Asiatica
Also known as Gotu Kola. A small unassuming plant used by monks and traditional healers for wound recovery. What makes it different: unlike most botanical folk remedies, this one made it into peer-reviewed, double-blind trials. And the trials didn't say "we're not sure." They said "look at this."

Here's what the published research on concentrated Centella Asiatica extract shows it can do inside the skin:

Wakes up fibroblasts, the cells that build the collagen and elastin your skin needs to keep bouncing back
Boosts elastin production right down in the dermis, exactly the layer where stretching is happening
Slows down the breakdown of the skin's structural scaffolding under mechanical stress
Improves microcirculation so tissue gets more oxygen exactly when it's under pressure

The trial that changed the conversation

Eighty pregnant women. Two groups. Nobody knew who got what.

In a published clinical trial, eighty pregnant women were randomly split. Half received a cream containing concentrated Centella Asiatica extract. The other half received a placebo cream that looked, felt, and smelled the same. Neither the mums nor the researchers knew who got which one, that's what "double-blind" means, and it's what makes results trustworthy.

They kept it up through pregnancy. Then someone counted.

Placebo group
56%
developed new stretch marks
Centella group
34%
developed new stretch marks

Nearly a third fewer stretch marks in the Centella group. And here's the bit that made the researchers write it up: among the women who were already genetically predisposed to marks, so the mums whose own mothers had them, the difference was even bigger.

The predisposed sub-group result
In the high-risk sub-group, most mums using Centella did not develop new stretch marks during the trial period. In the placebo group, the majority did. Statistically significant. Not a fluke. (p < 0.01.)

We're not going to pretend BellyBloom Elixir replicates this exact trial. What we can tell you is that our formula is built around the active ingredient the trial studied, at meaningful concentration. Individual results vary. Genetics are the strongest single predictor. What we ask is this: use it every day for 90 days as directed. If your skin doesn't feel it's had the support it needs, one email and we refund. Every penny. No form, no interrogation, no questions.

The trick to look out for

You'll see Centella Asiatica on lots of labels now.
Very few of those creams actually contain a meaningful amount.

Once a paper like the Centella trial gets published, the industry catches on. Fast. In the last two years Centella has become the "buzz" ingredient at Boots, Superdrug, and every other pregnancy skincare aisle in the UK.

Here's the catch, and it's an important one to know if you're paying £22 for a jar. Most of these creams contain around 1 to 2% Centella. The clinical trials that showed real cellular activity used concentrated extract, not a trace amount tucked at the bottom of the ingredient list. It's the difference between a splash of coffee in a bucket of water, and an actual espresso.

Under EU and UK cosmetic law, ingredients on the back of the packaging are listed in order of concentration. If Centella Asiatica is the third-to-last ingredient on the label, before "parfum" and "preservatives", you're paying for water with a hint of green.

What's actually in BellyBloom
BellyBloom Natural Bump Elixir is built around a concentrated Centella Asiatica extract as the primary active, plus Triple-Weighted Hyaluronic Acid at low, medium and high molecular weight so hydration reaches three depths of skin instead of just sitting on top. No retinoids. No salicylic acid. No clary sage. No photosensitising citrus oils. The full INCI list is on every product page and every bottle. If it isn't on the label, it isn't in the bottle.

This is bigger than skin

It isn't about the marks. It's about how you feel when nobody's looking.

A 2021 study out of Michigan Medicine asked 116 pregnant women what worried them most about how pregnancy would change their body. They expected weight to top the list. It didn't. Stretch marks did. And when they dug into why, the researchers found something they hadn't expected.

75%
named the fear of permanent skin change as their #1 pregnancy body worry
38%
reported real embarrassment and self-consciousness in intimate settings after birth
1/7
UK women experience perinatal anxiety, and body-image changes are a known contributor

Pregnancy should feel like a season of quiet confidence.
Not a slow anxiety about the mirror at 3 a.m.

The question every UK mum asks

"My mum got them. Doesn't that just mean I will too?"

Honest answer: yes, genetics matter. A lot. Your mum having stretch marks is one of the strongest predictors that you might get them too. We're not going to pretend otherwise. Any brand that does is lying to you.

But here's what genetics actually determine. They set the baseline elasticity of your skin fibres. What they do not determine is whether those fibres get any support during the months of rapid stretching. Think of teeth. Some people are genetically prone to cavities. That doesn't mean brushing is pointless. It means daily support matters even more if the odds are stacked.

And here's the thing about the Centella trial we found interesting: the sub-group where the biggest difference emerged wasn't the low-risk mums. It was the predisposed ones. Which doesn't mean it will work for you personally, genetics are complex, and no cream can rewrite them. But it does mean not writing yourself off before trying might be worth it.

My belly was tight and itchy every evening from about 26 weeks, it was properly keeping me up. Started this and within a week the itch had eased. My husband noticed before I did that I wasn't scratching anymore.

Second baby. First time round I used cocoa butter religiously and still got marks. This time I wanted something with actual research behind it. What I love: they don't pretend it's a miracle. They tell you what it is and back it with a refund. Second bottle ordered.

Oils were staining every top I own, so I stopped bothering. This absorbs in under a minute. I put it on after my shower and I'm dressed straight after. That's the reason I've actually stuck with a routine this pregnancy.

The questions we get most

Straight answers, no fluff.

Is BellyBloom safe throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding? +
Yes. Every single ingredient is reviewed against a pregnancy-first protocol before it goes into the formula. No retinoids. No salicylic acid. No clary sage before 37 weeks. No photosensitising citrus oils. No synthetic fragrance. No parabens. A UK Cosmetic Product Safety Report is on file with our responsible person, batch Certificate of Analysis available on request. It's safe to use from first trimester right through breastfeeding. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or a specific dermatological condition, always run it by your midwife or OB-GYN first, standard advice with any new skincare.
When should I actually start using it? +
Ideally in the first or very early second trimester, so your skin has the support before the fastest stretching kicks in around week 20 to 24. That said, it's never wasted to start later. Plenty of mums start at 30 weeks and still feel a difference in tightness and itching. Postpartum use is common too, plenty of mums keep going to help skin bounce back.
How is this different from Bio-Oil, Palmer's, or belly butters? +
Different jobs entirely. Butters, oils and cocoa-based creams work on the surface: they soften the outer layer and can help with the feel of the skin. That's a real thing, we're not knocking it. BellyBloom Elixir is a low-viscosity water-based serum with smaller molecular ingredients designed to sink deeper into the skin, targeting the layer where marks actually form. It's not either/or, and plenty of our customers use both. But if you're picking one to stick with, this is the one built around the ingredient the clinical research actually studied.
Is it greasy? Will it stain my clothes? +
No, and this is the reason a lot of mums switch. The serum absorbs in under 60 seconds. No shine, no stickiness, no oily film. You can pull on your maternity leggings straight after applying without a mark on the fabric. If you've ever had to bin a top because of Bio-Oil stains, you'll get why this matters.
How long does one bottle last? +
Approximately 30 to 40 days with twice-daily use, once in the morning after a shower and once in the evening before bed. That's why our 3-pack is the one most UK mums pick, it covers a full trimester at the best per-bottle price with free UK shipping and no reordering panic at 34 weeks.
What if it just doesn't work for my skin? +
Try it risk-free for 90 days. Open the bottle. Use it every day for the full 90 days. Give it a proper chance. If at any point in those 90 days you're not thrilled with how your skin looks and feels, send one email to hello@trybellybloom.com with your order number. We refund within 24 hours. No returns to post. No form to fill in. No questions about why. That's the whole promise.
Any scent? I'm nauseous with anything strong. +
A very light natural scent from the botanical extracts, no synthetic fragrance, no perfume oils, nothing added to make it "smell nice." Most mums with pregnancy nausea tell us it's one of the few skincare products they can use comfortably. If you're extra-sensitive, do a small patch test on your forearm first, always sensible advice.
Where does it ship from? +
BellyBloom is formulated to UK and EU cosmetic regulations, with a UK-registered responsible person and every batch backed by a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Orders ship internationally and typically arrive to UK addresses within 6-10 working days. All import duties and taxes are covered by us, you pay only what you see at checkout. If you have any hold-up with delivery, we cover it, no questions.
